BMW 1600-2 Cabrio E114C

In 1968, BMW added the two-door 1600-2 to its range. From 1968 onwards, Baur, the Stuttgart-based chassis company, produced a 2+2 seat Cabriolet version of this 4.23 m car.

The car is driven by a four-cylinder engine with a cubic capacity of 1573 ccm and 85 bhp which, as in all BMWs of the time, is fitted in the prow at a 30 degree angle. A downdraught carburettor prepares the mixture and the gas cycle of the ultramodern power train controls the overhead camshaft using suspended valves. The chassis of the front spring struts on A-arms guides and semi-trailing arm rear axle also originates from the "New class", twice over. Firstly with the complex independent suspension at both the front and back, the -2 was also considerably superior to much more expensive cars in the 1960s. Secondly, the brake system was very advanced and powerful: drum brakes were sufficient on the rear axle; but disc brakes, otherwise the reserve of expensive cars or sports cars, were used at the front.
