BMW 700 LS E107

The BMW 700 was based partly on the BMW 600, but unlike its predecessor was the first BMW with a self-supporting all-steel body, the result of a collaboration with Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti. The car was built between August 1959 and September 1965. It was launched in the form of the BMW 700 Coupé, followed by the BMW 700 (saloon), BMW 700 Sport, BMW LS Luxus (1962 to 1965) and BMW LS Coupé (1964 and 1965).

When BMW brought out the 700, they parted from the futuristic and highly functional shape of the BMW 600 and returned to a conventional style with classic prow, side doors and notchback. The fan-cooled two-cylinder engine with light alloy crankcase was taken from a motorcycle, as it was in the 600, and is fitted in the rear of the car. The first version from 1959 delivers 30 bhp at 5000 rpm. The luggage compartment is under the front bonnet and the spare wheel in front of it.

Slowly but surely, the 700 became a middle-sized vehicle even though it didn't feature the four-cylinder engine planned for the BMW LS Luxus and the extension to the chassis that made the LS-Coupé seem somewhat oversized when viewed from the side didn't prove necessary. 188 121 cars of all 700 and LS models were built in total.
