BMW Z1

The BMW Z1 was unveiled in 1987 at the IAA and a limited number of just 8000 vehicles were built between 1988 and 1991. BMW Technik GmbH, the subsidiary founded in 1985, was responsible for planning and running the project. The men behind the car were Ulrich Bez and designer Harm Lagaay. In order to keep a lid on costs, the car used volume production parts in e.g. its drive technology. Despite having just 125 kW (170 bhp), the Z1 had a good engine and its low weight and complex chassis allowed it to corner at high speeds.

The Z1 was produced in just one model without any equipment variants. The buyer could simply pick the colour (initially "toprot ", "fungelb ", "urgrün ", "traumschwarz " - later also "purblau " and "magicviolett") and interiors (dunkelgrau, hellgrau, gelb, rot).
